As a BJP candidate, attorney Ujjwal Nikam will represent Mumbai North-Central Constituency in the People’s Court?

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is concentrating on ‘Mission 400’ for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and based on her prior performance, sources indicate that Poonam Mahajan, the current two-term MP for Mumbai North-Central, is unlikely to get a ticket. Senior counsel Ujwal Nikam has reportedly shown interest in running for this seat, and preliminary talks with the BJP state leadership have already taken place. The BJP has not yet announced a candidate for the seat, however.

The party had previously asked star Madhuri Dixit to take the same position, but she turned them down. Unverified rumors also state that Ashish Shelar has shown little desire to run for this seat. As a result, the party has been looking for a well-known figure who can draw in the well-educated elite that lives in Vile Parle and Bandra West. Certain senior officials of the Maharashtra BJP have also shown interest in Nikam’s candidacy, according to sources inside the party. When News18 tried to reach Nikam for a comment, he was not accessible.

The BJP stands to gain a great deal from Nikam’s candidacy because of his spotless record and uncontroversial persona. Nikam has a favorable public image thanks to her work as a special public prosecutor for a number of high-profile cases, such as the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. This helps the BJP win over voters who might not have supported the incumbent MP, who has represented the district for the previous ten years.

Up until 2014, the Mumbai North-Central seat was thought to be a Congress stronghold. But Mahajan won this seat in her first election during the 2014 Modi wave, and she kept it in 2019. Furthermore, this seat has also been represented by the Shiv Sena in the past, with candidates including Manohar Joshi in 1999, Vidyadhar Gokhale in 1989, and Narayan Athawle in 1996 winning on party tickets.
