Attorneys warned not to choose sides in incidents of lynching

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the attorneys representing a public interest litigation on the increase in violence against minorities to refrain from favoring some cases above others that pertain to a certain group.

During the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition expressing concerns over an increase in occurrences of mob violence against Muslims, a three-judge bench led by Justice BR Gavai issued the following remarks and asked for urgent interim relief and/or compensation for the victims’ families.

The top court specifically questioned the attorneys over the 2022 murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who was slain for purportedly posting a social media message insulting Prophet Muhammad made by former BJP spokesman Nupur Sharma.
