BJP politician detained in ‘assault’ case

Following the arrest of BJP leader Neeraj Rajput in relation to a suspected assault case, the party said today that the Punjab government and city police were operating under political control.

In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer and the Election Commission of India, Jagmohan Singh Raju, the general secretary of the BJP Punjab branch, further claimed that the arrest was made just to sabotage Taranjit Singh Sandhu’s campaign, who is the BJP’s candidate for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.

Furthermore, he said that when the Mohkampura police took up Neeraj Rajput late yesterday evening, the policemen ignored his numerous calls. He said that when BJP district president Harvinder Singh Sandhu tried to discuss the matter with the police station, the SHO refused to meet with him.

“His personal security officer answered the phone when I phoned police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, but he spoke aggressively and refused to connect to the police commissioner. The assistant commissioner of police, who I had also attempted to contact, did not respond. After that, I contacted the SHO, but he also ended the conversation,” he said.

He said that this forced him to file a complaint with the Election Commission and ask for its prompt attention.

However, the police officers denied the accusations and said that Rajput was taken into custody after an inquiry into the homicidal assault case that occurred three days before. The lady had reportedly been assaulted in a store by many people who injured her with sharp objects.

After conducting an inquiry and apprehending the culprits, the police discovered after questioning that the Rajputs had sent them. The accused and the victim were both immigrants.

“The cops detained Neeraj and his brother yesterday. No one is above the law, and nobody will be permitted to undermine the city’s law and order,” said Mohkampura police station SHO Harpreet Singh.
