Bus in Jajpur, Odisha, goes over a bridge, killing five and injuring forty

In Jajpur, Odisha, on Monday night, a passenger bus crashed over a bridge, resulting in five fatalities and at least 40 injuries. Around nine o’clock at night, an accident occurred on the Barabati Bridge on National Highway-16 when the bus was traveling from Puri to West Bengal.

About forty of the approximately forty passengers on the bus were hurt. The disaster has claimed the lives of four males and one lady, according to the inspector in charge of the Dharamshala Police Station. About forty wounded individuals were sent to Cuttack SCB Medical College.

This collision was reportedly caused by the driver losing control. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik offered Rs 3 lakh in compensation to each family of the dead while expressing sadness for the lives lost.

According to Transport Commissioner Amitav Thakur, the bus was headed to Haldia in West Bengal. He said that medical teams had been sent to assist the wounded, and that sixteen ambulances had been used to bring the victims to Cuttack. “The rescue operation has concluded as the bus was raised using a crane,” he said.

According to Jajpur’s Collector and District Magistrate, Nikhil Pavan Kalyan, gas cutters were used to free trapped people inside the vehicle.

The majority of the passengers were from West Bengal, according to Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal, who added that the names of the fatalities were not yet known.
