Different CAA dates are determined by BJP netas. To be voted on: TMC

COOCH BEHAR: The Trinamool Congress accused the Bengal BJP of raising the Citizenship Amendment Act “just for votes” after two of its leaders announced two distinct timelines for its implementation.

Shantanu Thakur, the junior Union minister of shipping, said on Sunday that the CAA will be put into effect in a week. On Monday, Suvendu Adhikari, the assembly opposition leader and comrade in the party, extended the timeframe for implementation to the end of February.
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded to the allegations on Monday. “Refugee colonies already have a permanent address from us. You get benefits under state welfare programs like Krishak Bandhu, Sikshashree, Kanyashree, and Lakshmir Bhandar; your children attend school, and you receive rations. If you hadn’t been a citizen, might you have benefited from these programs? “Could you have cast a ballot if you weren’t a citizen?” she questioned at a Cooch Behar rally.
BJP junior Union minister Thakur “guaranteed” that CAA will be implemented “in the next seven days” after the “recent inauguration of Ram Mandir” during his speech at a rally on Sunday in Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas. “Those who have come to this country after 1971 have a right to vote but I have heard there are thousands here who cannot,” he said.
Adhikari said on Monday that by February 29, 2024, the Modi administration will implement the CAA. The CM is attempting to mislead people. The goal of the CAA, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is to provide citizenship rather than take it away.
Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari said, “When a person applies for a visa, they are never questioned for land documentation if they are originally from this side of the border. However, refugees from Bangladesh are required to provide land records from before 1971,” they said, adding that the CAA will stop this.
In Cooch Behar, Chief Minister Banerjee replied on Monday. “My buddies from Rajbanshi, you already have citizenship. She questioned the audience on how non-citizens could cast ballots, saying, “They (BJP leaders) are raking up the CAA issue for political reasons ahead of the elections.”
Shashi Panja, a senior state minister, said that the BJP was “resorting to its old tactics vis-a-vis CAA.” “Our chief minister has said unequivocally that this is just a BJP electoral issue. The CAA aims to provide citizenship to those who currently have Indian citizenship. Individuals already get their ration and have the ability to vote as beneficiaries of governmental programs. This has nothing to do with giving people benefits or security; it’s just a BJP electoral topic,” the speaker said. Since the CAA was approved by Parliament in December 2019, it has not yet been put into effect.
