Elections for the Lok Sabha in 2024: Pawar vs Pawar in the Baramati seat

With the nomination of Sunetra Pawar, the wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as its candidate for the next elections, the Baramati constituency—home ground of seasoned politician Sharad Pawar—is preparing for a high-stakes political contest. This choice paves the way for an exciting election struggle as Sunetra Pawar gets ready to run against Supriya Sule, the daughter of Sharad Pawar and her sister-in-law.

Speaking to a Marathi-speaking reporter, Sunetra, 60, stated that she was having a “lucky day.”

Sunetra Pawar remarked, “I thank Amit Shah, Narendra Modiji, and all Mahayuti leaders (Shiv Sena, BJP, and NCP) for thinking of me as capable of fighting the election.”

Concerning taking on Sule, she said, “Voters have taken the fight in their hands.”

Sunetra Pawar’s candidacy for the 2018 Lok Sabha elections was just confirmed by Sunil Tatkare, the head of the Maharashtra NCP branch. This declaration follows the NCP’s (Sharadchandra Pawar) recent release of its preliminary slate of five candidates for Maharashtra.

Tatkare said that rather than family connections, philosophy and ideals are at the center of the conflict in Baramati. Following the party’s split in 1999, Baramati is set to experience a rare battle: a Pawar vs Pawar clash, with Sunetra Pawar, a novice to political politics, joining the fight.

The main contenders in the election are Ajit Pawar, who sided with the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government in July of last year, and his uncle, seasoned politician Sharad Pawar.

The six assembly segments that make up the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency are Baramati town, Indapur, Daund, Purandar, Bhor, and Khadakwasla.
