Farmers protest “inaction” after the murder of Shubhkaran

At today’s Jyoti Swarup Chowk, a sizable gathering of farmers protested under the BKU (Ekta Sidhupur) flag, calling for the prosecution of those accountable for farmer Shubhkaran’s murder. They set fire to an effigy of the Center and chanted anti-Union and state slogans.

Farmers were resentful, according to union district president Gurmeet Singh Rurki, since the government had done nothing to apprehend those accountable for Shubhkaran’s death or for the murder of farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri. In order to get votes, he advised the farmers to challenge BJP officials on their support of the farmers during the next Parliamentary elections. They need to be flashed red flags if they didn’t respond.

He asked that the proceedings brought against the farmers during the movement be dropped, that their debts be forgiven, that they be granted a pension of Rs. 1,000 after 58 years, and more.

Other farmer leaders in attendance were Balwinder Singh, Prakash Singh, Jhujhar Singh, Baldev Singh, Mohinder Singh, Karnail Singh, Sukhwinder Singh, and Balwinder Singh.
