Sudha Murty took her oath to serve as a Rajya Sabha MP

In the presence of her husband, N R Narayana Murthy, Sudha Murty, a former engineer who is now a philanthropist, took an oath as a Rajya Sabha MP on Thursday. In his room at Parliament House, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar delivered the oath. Piyush Goyal, the leader of the House, was also present on the occasion.

On International Women’s Day last Friday, Murty, 73, the author of many novels, most of which are aimed at children, and the former chairman of the Infosys Foundation, received a nomination to the Rajya Sabha. In addition, she is well known for her contributions to English and Kannada literature. She has been honored with the Padma Bhushan (2023), the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar, and the Padma Shri (2006).

As the first female engineer to work at TELCO, Murty is well-known for having given her husband the first Rs 10,000 from her emergency savings to launch Infosys, which is now valued at over USD 80 billion. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is married to her daughter Akshata.
