In Mahanadi, a boat carrying fifty passengers capssizes, leaving one dead and seven missing

In the Lakhanpur subdivision of the district, a boat overturned in the Mahanadi river close to Saradha on Friday, leaving at least one person dead and seven more missing. Radhika Nisad, 40, a native of Anjolipalli in the adjacent Raigad district of Chhattisgarh, passed away.

 

According to sources, some fifty Anjolipalli residents traveled to Jharsuguda for fun. In the afternoon, they chartered a boat to visit a temple at neighboring Patharseni island in Bargarh’s Ambabhona block. Saradha ferry ghat is situated close to the Odisha-Chhattisgarh boundary.

They had barely gotten back to Saradha ghat after praying when their boat overturned a few hundred metres from the river’s edge. Local boatmen and fisherman heard their shouts and dove into the river, saving the majority of the passengers. Eight people, nevertheless, were untraceable. Radhika’s corpse was eventually pulled from the river by villagers. Thankfully, her kid made it safely to land. Several children and a three-month-old baby were among the rescued individuals. After being rescued, two injured individuals were sent to the nearby hospital.

Following notification, Jharsuguda collector Aboli Sunil Naravane, SP Smit Parmar, RDC Srikant Prusty, IG, North Himanshu Lal, and SP hurried to the scene to assess the situation. SP Dibyang Patel and Raigad collector Kartikeya Goyal also offered support for the rescue effort.

In addition, a group of five scuba divers and two rescue cameras arrived in Jharsuguda by air in the evening and began the rescue effort at the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s request.

The Chief Minister offered his sympathies and said that the deceased’s family will get Rs 4 lakh in compensation. Naveen also gave the district government instructions on how to treat the persons who were rescued properly.

The Jharsuguda collector had set up emergency lights, so the rescue mission was still in progress when the final reports arrived. There were senior authorities in attendance.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened because the boat was overcrowded with people and three motorbikes. on addition, the boat lacked a valid paperwork permit to operate on the river and a fitness certificate. It was also devoid of passenger safety equipment.
