Large decrease in traffic accidents last year: Guv

Speaking at the Road Safety Award Ceremony held at the Police Headquarters here today, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla stressed that maintaining road safety needed more than simply following the law; it also required stringent implementation of those laws. He went on to say that encouraging collaboration in the event of a traffic accident was a shared duty of every person, community, and organization.

Because it is a mountainous state, Himachal Pradesh has more obstacles when it comes to road safety. We are determined to establish a culture of safety on our roadways and are taking proactive steps, educating people, and coming up with creative solutions to overcome these obstacles,” the governor said.

He said that the state’s increased road connection has contributed to a notable increase in tourism, especially on weekends and during the busiest travel times. According to current statistics, the number of cars entering the state on weekends during the tourist season averages around 10,000, he added.

According to the governor, fewer traffic accidents are occurring as a result of the Himachal Pradesh Police, the Transport Department, the Public Works Department, and other affiliated agencies working together to detect black spots.

He said that as a result of everyone’s combined efforts, there had been a notable decline in traffic-related fatalities, injuries, and deaths in 2023 compared to 2022.

In 2023, there were 2,253 accidents, 889 fatalities, and 3,304 injuries reported; in 2022, there were 2,597 accidents, 1,032 fatalities, and 4,063 injuries reported. There has been a 13% decrease in accidents, a 14% decrease in fatalities, and an 18% decrease in injuries in the state as compared to 2022, he said.

The Governor recognized those who have made major contributions to road safety, including police officers, members of the Public Works and Transport departments, staff from the National Highway Authority of India, and members of the media.

The Police Department composed a song on road safety, which the Governor also published.

Sanjay Kundu, the Director General of Police, had earlier greeted and honored the Governor.
