Locals in Sirsa complain about inadequate cleanliness and oppose rubbish being disposed of nearby

Locals of JJ Colony in Sirsa organized a dharna today in response to the inadequate sanitary conditions in their community.

They claimed that for a considerable amount of time, the Municipal Corporation had been disposing of trash close to JJ Colony’s entrance gate on the Civil Hospital road. They said they were compelled to live surrounded by trash heaps.

The demonstrators said that nothing had been done about their repeated complaints to the authorities about this matter. They insisted on finding a quick solution to the problem. The demonstrators said that while the Municipal Council had made many statements about upholding cleanliness, an adequate waste management system was not in place. They alleged that the council had turned the area along Civil Hospital Road into a landfill for the city’s rubbish. There, locals said they were dealing with a number of issues as a result of the buildup of waste mounds. A strong stench permeates the neighborhood, making it unsightly for anybody strolling by.

Residents Sanju, Arjun, and others said that the municipality had been disposing of the city’s trash close to the colony’s main road for about a year. By midday, nobody is picking up the trash. There, animals scavenge for food, which sometimes makes it hard for commuters to pass.

Sanju, a resident, said that they were sent to the EO after approaching the SDM with the problem. They were sent to the sanitary inspector at the EO, who promised them a remedy and then sent them back. Still, nothing has changed in the circumstances.

Manoj, a resident, said that the area has turned into a disease breeding ground due to the attraction of flies and mosquitoes. Weather becomes worse on wet days. Residents said that children were becoming ill as a result of the unhygienic circumstances. They were disappointed, they said, because no one was listening to their grievances. The locals insisted that rubbish be stopped being dumped in their neighborhood right now.

According to Jaiveer, the MC’s Chief Sanitary Inspector, the municipality has nowhere else to dispose of its trash. However, he stated that the idea of building a waste boundary wall was being studied in light of the challenges experienced by the people living in JJ Colony. “The trash won’t be left out in the open once the boundary wall is built,” he said.
