Nanded campaigners find dead fish in the Godavari River and attribute it to aquatic weed

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: On Monday morning, a significant number of dead fish were seen floating at the famous Nagina Ghat on the Godavari River near Nanded.

Environmental groups have claimed that the Godavari River’s water hyacinths, an aquatic weed, are to blame for the deaths. The aquatic weed’s existence indicates that the river’s water is tainted.

Water hyacinths thrive in water that is tainted with various contaminants, including untreated sewage. Fish and other aquatic life are dying because of the weed’s reduction of oxygen levels, according to local naturalist Kiran Shilewar.

There are still several locations along the Godavari River where untreated sewage runs straight into the river along its path from Nanded. Shilewar said that repeated requests for government action to reduce the threat of river contamination were being ignored. One of the nation’s principal rivers is the Godavari. The contamination in the river remains unabated even with the generous financing for the repair of the river that flows through Nanded, he added.

Notably, Nagina and other well-known ghats on the Godavari River bank are frequented by a large number of Sikh pilgrims who go to Nanded. It should be mentioned that the local government unveiled multi-million-dollar plans to upgrade Nanded City’s drainage infrastructure last year. Nonetheless, many residents claim that the growth of water hyacinths in the river water has shown government negligence.

Naturalists demanded that the quality of the river water be checked after a similar event on the banks of the Godavari River, which passes through Nanded, was recorded about a year ago.
It was not possible to get in touch with the relevant Nanded-Waghala Municipal Corporation municipal authorities for a response.
