Odisha: A bus slides over a bridge in Jajpur, leaving five people dead and 35 wounded

Over 35 people were hurt and at least five people, including a lady, perished after a bus crashed over a bridge in the Jajpur district of Odisha on Monday night, according to authorities.

The event happened at around nine o’clock at night on the Barabati bridge on National Highway 16. The bus, which had roughly forty-seven people on board, was traveling from Puri to West Bengal.

“The disaster claimed the lives of four men and one lady. The wounded were sent to Cuttack SCB Medical College, with over forty individuals suffering injuries, according to Tapan Kumar Naik, inspector in charge of the Dharamshala Police Station.

According to the authorities, the driver lost control of the car, causing the collision.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik issued an ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh apiece for the deceased’s next of kin in addition to expressing sorrow over their loss.

The bus, according to Transport Commissioner Amitav Thakur, was headed toward West Bengal’s Haldia.

“A medical team has been assembled to provide treatment. With the assistance of sixteen ambulances, the wounded, including women and children, are being transported to Cuttack. The bus was raised by a crane, signaling the conclusion of the rescue effort,” he added.

According to Jajpur’s Collector and District Magistrate, Nikhil Pavan Kalyan, gas cutters were used to slice through the metal and free the occupants of the bus.

The majority of the passengers were from West Bengal, according to SP Vinit Agrawal, who also said that the dead had not yet been recognized.
