On Karwar Road, shoddy speed breakers generate traffic jams for drivers

Hubballi: Drivers and commuters have been having problems on Karwar Road due to the shoddy speed bump design.

Unscientific road humps at ESI hospital and Siddharoodh Mutt intersection on Karwar Road are obstructing drivers, particularly those on two-wheelers, auto rickshaws, and other vehicles, due to the authorities’ incompetence.

Concerned about the negligent behavior of the National Highways Authority of India authorities, many claim that these unreliable speed limiters have caused several accidents.
They said that as more and more new roads are built, poor design for road humps is generating problems for drivers and increasing the risk of nighttime traffic accidents as a result of government neglect.

Under the auspices of Sadbhavana Samiti, a group of like-minded individuals headed by Dr. Jituri, Sanjay Shetti, attorney GR Andanimath, and others began a drive in 2015 to rid roadways of unscientific road humps and issued a notice to that effect.

When the municipal officials refused to cooperate, the Samiti brought the case before the Hubballi court, which issued an order directing the municipal authorities to remove the non-scientific road humps and install scientific ones in accordance with the guidelines established by the Indian Road Congress.
After that, the city officials demolished the illogical speed bumps by hiring people and purchasing JCBs for crores of rupees. Sources also said that on recently constructed concrete highways, several erroneous speed bumps are appearing once again.

The regulations state that a warning sign must be positioned 40 meters in front of a speed limiter. The government can lessen the number of accidents in the city if it adheres to Indian Road Congress (IRC) standards.
Road humps that were not properly installed in Hubballi-Dharwad are dangerous for drivers’ health as well as their cars. Road humps and rumble strips should have uniform designs, according to former Anand Nagar bank employee Ashok Kumar.

On the recently built internal cement and concrete roadways inside the city, there are unauthorized and unlawful road humps. The Indian Road Congress claims that there are stringent guidelines regarding the height of speed breakers.

“I will take up the issue seriously and instruct all zonal officials to prepare a list of unauthorised speed bumps,” said HDMC Commissioner Ishwar Ullagaddi. Certain PWD-developed roads will be examined by highway officials, who will also call meetings with relevant agencies to discuss the situation and take steps to remove any unauthorized speed bumps.
