Panchkula MC will eliminate legacy garbage and repair the 4-acre Jhuriwala site

At the dumping site in Jhuriwala village, the local Municipal Corporation (MC) has finished the bioremediation of legacy garbage. Now, a forest with a planting of trees and plants will be restored on the 4-acre plot of land on the Panchkula-Barwala road.

The MC has been disposing of the trash produced in the city at the Sector 23 dumping site because it has been operating without a waste processing facility for a considerable amount of time. The city authority opted to dump the rubbish near Jhuriwala when locals objected.

Following that, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) was notified of the situation. In November 2022, the NGT fined the MC Rs 9 crore for inflicting environmental harm. In order to repair the site and undo the harm done to the surrounding ecosystem, the tribunal requested corrective and preventative measures.

Today, MC authorities announced that the bioremediation of more than 90,837 MT of waste at the Jhuriwala site was finished. They said that all of the garbage has now been removed from the 4-acre property.

The work was finished on April 23, according to Manoj Ahlawat, the SDO at the MC office. “The bioremediation process was initiated in December of the previous year. In an effort to conserve the area naturally, we have recently begun planting grass and trees there,” he said.

In the meantime, MC representatives also said that the garbage at the Sector 23 disposal site was still being bioremediated. “The waste was dumped on approximately 12 acres,” they said. Over 3,04,645 MT of trash were first estimated by the MC and processed. However, bioremediation of recently discovered garbage at the same location is under progress and may take many months to finish.

According to officials, on Friday at the NGT’s hearing in the 2022 case of Sanjay Kumar against Union of India and others, the MC will provide the status report on the two legacy trash disposal sites.
