Physicians at AIIMS express alarm over the growth of liver diseases in Odisha

On Friday, gastroenterologists at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, expressed alarm over the increase in patients seeking consultations for problems connected to their livers, emphasizing the need for lifestyle modifications to reverse the condition.

Around thirty percent of patients who attend the outpatient department (OPD) seek consultation for liver-related illnesses, according to Dr. Manash Kumar Panigrahi, an extra professor in the gastroenterology department, who was speaking at an event held in honor of World Liver Day. Approximately 1,500 of the 4,000 to 5,000 patients who attend the department each month complain of conditions connected to their livers, he added.

Over 90% of liver diseases may be prevented if detected at an early stage. He emphasized the need for screening and immunization against hepatitis B, as well as the need of regular exercise and abstaining from processed, junk, and alcohol-containing diets.

Dr Ashutosh Biswas, the executive director of AIIMS, said that sedentary lifestyles, poor food choices, and alcohol use had made the problem worse. He emphasized how important lifestyle decisions are in avoiding liver problems. He urged people to see doctors for appropriate medical guidance and warned against treating liver problems with over-the-counter or complementary and alternative medicines without a prescription.

Faculty members and department head Dr. Subash Chandra Samal emphasized the dedication to promoting liver health and disease prevention. A program for patient awareness and involvement was planned. The participants received instruction on maintaining a disease-free and healthy liver. Every Wednesday, the department has a special liver OPD.
