Political parties halt their election campaigns after the boat disaster

Political parties halted their parliamentary election campaigns after the tragic boat capsize disaster that claimed six lives. Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, the National Conference’s (NC) nominee for the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, halted his campaigning efforts for a span of two days.

For all of us as well as the children’s grieving families, this is a heartbreaking day. Renowned Shia leader Mehdi wrote on X, “Prayers for the families of the deceased and for the angelic souls.”

Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference (JKPC), headed by Sajad Lone, halted all of the party’s election-related operations. “Our sympathies are with the bereaved parties. The party said, “We are in support and sympathy with the impacted families.Lone is running for the Lok Sabha from the north Kashmiri seat of Baramulla.

The Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party, headed by Altaf Bukhari, said that the Kashmir valley will not be hosting any political events today.

When questioned about whether the government had alerted the public to the rising water levels in the Valley’s rivers and streams, Srinagar Deputy Commissioner Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat responded that a notice had been sent out on Monday advising residents living close to the river’s embankments to exercise caution. “Jhelum in Ram Munshibagh poses an 18-foot risk.” We send out a first signal at 10 feet, advising anyone living close to the banks to exercise caution. But, he said, “it was flowing below the danger level, and the rain had stopped about ten o’clock last night.”

Concurrently, locals and CPM leader MY Tarigami questioned why the foot bridge’s construction was taking so long. According to Tarigami, “the years-long construction of a footbridge highlights a missed opportunity to prevent such tragedies.”

According to an eyewitness, the boat broke in two after striking one of the bridge’s pillars during construction. “The government need to explain why this bridge hasn’t been finished for the last seven years. “This is just plain unfair,” a local stated. People said that despite the media outlets’ repeated complaints, the government took no action to finish the bridge that was still under construction.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased in a post on X. I keep an eye on things all the time. Condolences were sent by Apni Party leader Altaf Bukhari, BJP spokesman for J&K Altaf Thakur, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, NC president Farooq Abdullah, and vice president Omar Abdullah.
