Rahul Gandhi calls on Lalu Yadav as the Supreme Court overturns his conviction in a defamation case

Following the Supreme Court’s stay of his conviction in the ‘Modi’ surname case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid a visit to former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav in the national capital on Friday.

The All India Congress Committee published photos of the two leaders meeting at the New Delhi home of RJD MP and Lalu’s daughter, Misa Bharti, in a tweet.

The meeting also included Congress general secretary KC Venugopal and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav.

Previously, the RJD patriarch had, in a lighter mood, counseled Rahul to marry at the United Opposition’s first meeting in Patna in June.

The Congress and the RJD are both members of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A).

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar called the meeting in Patna.

Meanwhile, after the Supreme Court’s respite in the criminal defamation case, Rahul attended a news conference at the Congress’s national headquarters in Delhi, thanking the people for their love and support and declaring that “truth always triumphs.”

“Truth always wins, if not today, then tomorrow or the next day.” “I appreciate everyone’s support,” he stated during a news conference in the nation’s capital.

In an interim judgment issued on Friday, the Supreme Court postponed his conviction in the criminal defamation case stemming from the ‘Modi surname’ statement.

In July, the Supreme Court issued notifications to the Gujarat government and the complainant in response to the Congress leader’s appeal of the Gujarat High Court judgment.

In a previous ruling, the Gujarat High Court rejected to suspend Rahul’s conviction in the criminal defamation case in which he was sentenced to two years in prison by the Surat court for the ‘Modi surname’ statement.

Gandhi was disqualified as MP from Kerala’s Wayanad on March 24 after his conviction in the case.

Prior to the 2019 national elections, a magisterial court punished Rahul Gandhi for his ‘Modi’ surname statements.
