Rahul Narwekar, a Maharashtra legislator, causes a stir by supporting Don Arun Gawli’s daughter at a Mumbai event

Speaking at an event sponsored by Don Arun Gawli’s Akhil Bharatiya Sena (ABS), Speaker Rahul Narwekar has caused quite a stir among activists in the city and inside the BJP.

Narwekar participated in an ABS-organized event last Monday at the Heritage hotel in Byculla. Among the guests was the don’s daughter, Geeta Gawli, who has been involved in a number of criminal cases, including murder. Upon being contacted by FPJ, Narwekar verified that he had received an invitation and had really attended the event. He waxed poetic in his remarks about his support for Geeta Gawli and the ABS. He even went so far as to guarantee former corporator Geeta Gawli that he would assist her in winning the mayoral election.

Narwekar stood for the Mumbai South Constituency seat on the BJP’s ticket to compete in the Lok Sabha election. However, it seems that the party is not in the mood to comply. He is attempting to get close to the ABS despite the fact that the latter has also run for office in the city because he is upset about it.

A BJP insider informed FPJ on Friday that Narwekar, a Colaba MLA, had ruined whatever chance he may have had of winning the party ticket. Indeed, he has inadvertently increased the likelihood that Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha would get the ticket. Narwekar not only spoke at the event and attended it, but he also uploaded the footage on Facebook, according to a party MLA. “How he could have done that baffles me. We are all in shock here at the celebration. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s blue-eyed son Narwekar helped him win the Speakership even though our party had many worthy candidates. He has severely embarrassed us all, even Fadnavis,” the MLA said. An ex-MLA for the party said that since the bhais control vote banks, all parties enlist their assistance when elections are coming up. But it’s done in a very covert manner. The FPJ contacted a number of activists who conveyed their disgust at Narwekar’s behavior.

We are curious as to what special circumstances kept the Speaker from declining the invitation to attend the ceremony.
