Sanjay Singh’s request for bail is heard on March 5 after the SC notifies the ED

On Monday, the Supreme Court sent a notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) about Parliamentarian Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and his bail request in the money laundering case pertaining to the now-canceled 2021–22 Delhi excise policy.

Singh’s ongoing lawsuit contesting his arrest in October of last year, along with the issue, was scheduled for hearing on March 5 before a panel of justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta.

In his capacity as Singh’s representative, senior attorney Abhishek Manu Singhvi apprised the court on the ongoing case, which was last heard on February 5 and scheduled for hearing on March 5. Singhvi said that the ED and the government have not yet submitted their answers about the outstanding issue.

Singh has appealed the Delhi High Court’s decision from February 7 that denied his bail request, citing the testimony of accused-turned-approver Dinesh Arora, who said that he gave ₹2 crore to an AAP leader’s friend. Singh has expressed doubts about the accuracy of Arora’s assertion, claiming that he made six distinct comments. Based on Arora’s confession, the ED detained Singh on October 4.

The high court reviewed the testimony of other defendants and witnesses that connected Singh to the case and claimed that he played a key role in changing the excise laws to the advantage of businesspeople involved in the alcoholic beverage industry.

In October of last year, the Supreme Court granted bail to Manish Sisodia, the former deputy chief minister of Delhi who had also been detained in connection with the same case. In December, it also rejected a review request. Sisodia has a pending curative petition before the Supreme Court.
