SC requests the Yogi government’s answer over the early release of 15 convicts

On Friday, the Supreme Court requested the Uttar Pradesh government’s answer to a petition asking for consideration of the early release of 15 prisoners serving sentences of 15 to 23 years in the State’s Fatehgarh central jail in connection with different offences.

The Uttar Pradesh government was asked to respond to a petition filed by 15 prisoners, thus a vacation bench of justices Abhay S. Oka and K.V. Viswanathan scheduled a hearing for September.

The petitioner inmates have asked the State government to take into consideration their early release or sentence reduction in accordance with the August 2018 policy regulating the granting of sentence reductions. The petitioner inmates have requested that their request for sentence reduction be taken into account in the “interest of justice and balance of equity.”

The petitioners have informed the top court that the majority of the petitioners have already served out their sentences and that other accused people in like circumstances have previously been freed in accordance with the remission programme.
