Select the earliest date that may be used to conduct mayoral elections: Chandigarh administration to Punjab High Court

On Tuesday, the Chandigarh government was requested by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to determine the earliest feasible date for the mayoral elections.

The directive was given by a division bench of Justices Sudhir Singh and Harsh Bunger during the hearing of a petition that challenged the Chandigarh deputy commissioner’s decision, which moved the date of the mayoral elections from January 18 to February 6.

The court took the responses from the Chandigarh government and municipal corporation on record. The case was subsequently postponed until January 24 by the court.

The AAP councillor Kuldeep Kumar has filed a petition against the ruling delaying the mayoral elections.

Following presiding officer Anil Masih’s illness, which sparked objections from the Congress and AAP, the polls were postponed.

For the mayoral election, the two parties have teamed up. The BJP, which is now in control of the mayor’s office, came under fire from them for allegedly postponing elections because they believed they would lose.
