Leader of the Samajwadi Party and India’s oldest parliamentarian, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, passed away at the age of 94 on Tuesday at a Moradabad private hospital, according to a story on Jagran.com. He represented Sambhal in the UP as an MP.

Barq’s medical conditions led to his admission to the intensive care unit. He had an infection in his chest. Barq just had heart surgery as well. He had previously been hospitalized to Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital.

Akhilesh Yadav, the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and head of the SP, visited the sick MP a few days ago.

“It is very sorry to learn about the passing of Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Barq Saheb, a prominent Samajwadi Party leader and multiple MP. I hope his soul is at peace. May the surviving family members find the fortitude to endure this great loss. Heartfelt tribute,” the Samajwadi Party’s official X account said on X.

Barq was one of Uttar Pradesh’s most well-known Muslim leaders. He began his political career more than fifty-seven years ago, guided by the late Prime Minister Charan Singh. He collaborated closely with Azam Khan, Janeshwar Mishra, and Mulayam Singh Yadav.
