Shafiqur Rahman Barq: Who Was He? The Oldest MP in India Died Today

Shafiqur Rahman Barq, a member of the Samajwadi Party, died on Tuesday at a Moradabad private hospital. He was ninety-four years old.

In a post on X, the Samajwadi Party expressed its condolences, saying, “It is very sorry to learn about the passing of Mr. Shafiqur Rahman Barq Saheb, a senior Samajwadi Party leader and multiple MP. May peace be upon his soul.”

“May the surviving family members have the fortitude to endure this great loss. Warmest homage!” it continued.

Leader of the Rashtriya Lok Dal Jayant Chaudhary expressed his sympathies on Shri Shafiqur Rahman Barq ji’s passing. He was a leader who really understood the people at the bottom,” he said.

Shafiqur Rahman Barq: who was he?
First elected to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly in 1977, Shafiqur Rahman Barq represented the Sambhal district in the Bharatiya Kranti Dal. After that, he was elected to the position three times by various parties.

On the SP ticket, he was elected from Moradabad in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections. Then, four times (one from the BSP ticket), he won the same seat.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) announced Shafiqur Rahman Barq, the oldest member of the present Lok Sabha, as its contender for Sambhal in the 2024 elections.

Disputes
When he said that was against Islam and that Muslims could not follow it, he made national news. He drew comparisons between the fight for Indian independence and the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, which led to criticism.
