Surprise to the Indian block when Kuljit Singh Sandhu of the BJP is appointed Senior Deputy Mayor

On Monday, Kuljit Singh Sandhu of the BJP defeated Gurpreet Singh Gabi, a candidate for Congress and the AAP, to become the senior deputy mayor.

Every vote cast was counted in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation House, which has 36 members. The India bloc received 16 votes, the BJP’s Sandhu received 19, and one vote was deemed invalid.

Earlier, on Monday at 10 am, voting began for the positions of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

The elections for the two positions were originally set for February 27. However, Mayor Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor of the AAP announced the day before the polls that he would be absent from the House as presiding officer, having traveled out of state to see his sick sister. The elections were then scheduled for March 4 when the court halted the polling.

The election for the deputy mayor position in Chandigarh is still ongoing.

The person in charge of calling the election is Kuldeep Kumar Dhalor, the recently appointed mayor.

With 17 council members and one ex-officio vote from BJP MP Kirron Kher, the BJP leads the AAP-Congress coalition in terms of representation.
