Tarn Taran Diary: The BJP’s victory in Khadoor Sahib would be a miracle

If the BJP is able to record a presence in the Khadoor Sahib assembly seat, it would be nothing short of a miracle if the party decided to run alone in Punjab in the next Lok Sabha election. There are nine Vidha Sabha constituencies in the area, which also include Sultanpur Lodhi (Kapurthala), Baba Bakala and Jandiala Guru (Amritsar), Zira (Ferozepur), Tarn Taran, Patti, and Khemkaran in the Tarn Taran district.

Even though Khadoor Sahib is the headquarters of a sub-division, it is still a hamlet, mostly consisting of rural regions populated by Sikhs. This Lok Sabha seat, which covers the Punjabi districts of Majha, Malwa, and Doaba, was once known as the “Panthic” (Sikh-dominated) seat. It was part of the abolished Tarn Taran Lok Sabha constituency area. Up to now, it has been represented by the SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann once, the Congress seven times, and the SAD (Amritsar) candidates nine times. The BJP hasn’t even attempted to win any of these seats up to this point. With the recent addition of Sikh faces to positions ranging from district president to lower level officer-bearers, the BJP has reshaped the party, displacing its prior disillusioned ideologues who sat at home.

Without the Sikh face, the BJP has a solid foundation. The current group included district president Harjit Singh Sandhu, former SAD MLA Manjit Singh Manna, Gurmukh Singh Ghulla Baler, Anoop Singh Bhullar (son of former minister and Congress politician Gurchet Singh Bhullar), and a few others who were not even well-known to the majority of the locals. It must be difficult for the party to make a significant showing in the Lok Sabha election given the current circumstances.

Sakattar Singh, a 70-year-old inhabitant of Doburji village in Tarn Taran, has been practicing athletics at the Guru Arjun Dev Sports Stadium in Tarn Taran on a daily basis, which has led to the development of his passion for sports, especially athletics. He competed in and took home three race medals from the state-level spots competition, which was recently held in Mastuana (Sangrur).

Due to his family’s difficulties, he was only able to complete his middle school education. Despite his early age, he had a terrific body, which made him interested about sports. He remembered reading about senior races (Birdhan Dian Dauraa) to be conducted at Quila Raipur, Ludhiana, just eight years before. He had placed second in a 100-meter race and received a cash reward of Rs 2,000.

He claimed to have practiced for only ten days. His confidence was increased by his performance, and he began practicing often. According to him, his love of gaming was sparked by the passing of young people in the neighborhood who were hoping to join the police force or the armed forces.

His home is located on the side of the road in the hamlet. He claimed to have placed second in the 5 km and 800 m races and third in the 200 m event in the most recent state-level games, which were held in Mastuana (Sangrur). These days he never misses state-level senior sports tournaments. He expressed his desire to live out his passion of the playground till the day he passes away. He said that his diet consists only of milk and products manufactured from it.
