The government will host a symposium on Saturday to raise public knowledge of the new legislation

Three laws have been passed to restructure the nation’s criminal justice system, doing away with antiquated colonial laws and bringing in laws that are focused on the needs of the people and a healthy democracy.

The old criminal laws, the Indian Penal Code, 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872, are replaced by the three laws, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023; and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. The enactment of these criminal statutes is scheduled for July 1, 2024.

The Ministry of Law and Justice is hosting a conference in New Delhi on Saturday with the theme “India’s Progressive Path in the Administration of Criminal Justice System” in an effort to raise awareness of these legislative enactments, especially among the legal community and stakeholders.

The principal guest for the event will be Justice D Y Chandrachud, the principal Justice of India.

Highlighting the salient features of the three criminal statutes, the conference also seeks to facilitate meaningful connections via technical and Q&A sessions. In addition, the Conference will be attended by district administration officials, advocates, academics, law students, police officers, public prosecutors, and representatives of law enforcement agencies.

The inaugural session opens the conference, which lasts all day, and the valedictory session closes it. Three technical sessions, one for each statute, are planned in between. The main goals of the new criminal law triumvirate will be clarified during the first session.
