The Himayatsagar reservoir provides surface water for the Hyderabad Sewage Board

The Himayatsagar reservoir is now the source of surface raw water for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB). Right now, a pontoon (floating) pumping mechanism set up on the reservoir’s surface water is pumping five more seven million gallons of water per day (MGD).

The Water Board was previously extracting 2.80–3.00 MGD from the 1,730-foot-deep Himayatsagar. Currently, barge-mounted pumps are being used to extract an additional 5 MGD from the new surface-level extraction. To guarantee dependable water extraction, the pontoon is outfitted with two 150 HP pump motors, one of which is active and the other as a backup.

Even though 1,730 feet of water is being pulled from the system, it has been determined to minimize intake from below the reservoir’s depth and instead use water that is one meter below the surface level since the water that is one meter below the surface level would have excellent aeration, dissolved oxygen, and no bad odor.

More water would be taken from the surface level in the next days in accordance with the necessity, HMWSSB officials informed TNIE. Two pump motors were used to stabilize the floating apparatus.

The extra water will be sent to the city’s neighboring neighborhoods that are close to the reservoirs and within the ORR boundaries. 2.967 tmcft is the reservoir’s current capacity, compared to 2.967 tmcft.

Pumping emergency from Nagarjunasagar shortly

All preparations are underway to extract water from Nagarjunasagar’s dead storage in the meantime. In a few while, ten emergency pumping engines would begin to pull 900 cubic feet of water. The Department of Irrigation and Command Area Development (I&CAD) has not yet approved emergency pumping, however. The Board will utilize emergency pumps to extract water when ICAD ceases doing so.
