This group plundered from vehicles parked just outside Tihar Jail

Delhi Police said on Wednesday that they had broken up a group of suspected pilferers who used to take items from guests’ parked cars at Tihar Jail, after the recent arrest of two individuals.

According to a senior police official, the 35-year-old suspect, Prakash, would often visit Tihar Jail’s gate number 4 and closely monitor visitors’ movements. He would then take advantage of this to steal cell phones and other valuables from the automobiles parked outside the jail’s gates.

The accused would then quickly turn over the stolen items to his accomplice, identified as 35-year-old Mohammed Sohail, a mechanic who would resell the stolen mobile phones’ spare components on the black market, according to Vichitra Veer, DCP (West).

The DCP said that after many reports, officers identified a pattern in the thefts of cell phones and other valuables from the cars parked close to the prison. DCP Vichitra Veer said, “After that, a team was assembled, a trap was set close to the jail, and the accused was apprehended for stealing cell phones and other valuables from a car.”

Prakash has a history of 43 robbery incidents and is a persistent criminal, according to information obtained during questioning, according to the police.

According to the DCP, the suspect had often taken items from cars parked outside the jail and sold them to his accomplice, Sohail.

The DCP said that Sohail was apprehended at Prakash’s request, and that “approximately eleven cell phones, wrist watches, purses, and other documents were recovered from their possession.”

According to authorities, the suspects have been placed under judicial custody and investigations are being conducted to find situations that are comparable.
