Three convicted of using the Nilgiris to hunt wild animals for meat

Udhagamandalam: In relation to a number of hunting incidents in the Naduvattam forest area in the Nilgiris, three persons were detained on Monday under the Wildlife Protection Act. Three other accused people are being sought as they flee.

The names of the accused are Fisal, Paraman, and Sabu Jacob. One of the three who is still unaccounted for is Sajeevan, an AIADMK official who oversaw Gudalur during the 2021 assembly election.

The others are Subir, who helps him with gun supply facilitation, and Srikumar, a country-made gun supplier.
When B. Sajeevan’s Silver Cloud estate was examined by forest inspectors on Sunday, the three were taken into custody. District forest officer (DFO) S Gowtham of the Nilgiris division said that a tip led to the search being conducted. “A single-barrel country gun was discovered during a check in the living quarters of Fisal and Sabu Jacob. Along with an air pistol and knives, forest authorities also discovered and seized two used cartridges and eleven pieces of ammunition intended for the illegal country gun, according to the DFO.

According to preliminary investigation, Fisal and Sabu Jacob shot an Indian gaur two weeks before, and after removing the necessary flesh, they disposed of the corpse in a thicket some two kilometers away. The two had used the country rifle to shoot a deer four months before, prepared the flesh, and eaten it. It was also discovered that Paraman, the estate accountant, had assisted them in purchasing the country’s gun ammunition.
While Sabu Jacob, Sajeevan, Subir, and Srikumar are evading capture, a hunt is in progress to find Paraman, Fisal, and Sabu Jacob.
