Tihar requests a diabetologist for Delhi CM from AIIMS: AAP

The Aam Aadmi Party stated on Sunday that the Tihar government has requested a diabetologist from AIIMS to treat Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The party said this refuted their assertions that the jailed CM had access to all medical facilities.

AAP presented a letter dated April 20 from AIIMS, the Director General of Prisons, requesting a diabetologist, to the media.

Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “The DG (Prisons) wrote a letter yesterday asking for a diabetologist from AIIMS,” at a news conference. This demonstrates that the federal government and prison administration, headed by the BJP, have been lying about having expert physicians up to this point. These folks claimed to have insulin and all the experts up to Saturday. In prison, everything is accessible.

“An elected Chief Minister is not being given medicine. He is a chief minister who has severe diabetes and tells a diabetologist every day that he needs insulin.”

“I have diabetes for 20 to 22 years, I have been on insulin for 12 years, and I take 50 units of insulin daily,” Kejriwal said, as recounted by Bharadwaj. The only medication that can be used to manage a patient’s rising blood sugar level is insulin.

In response to Bharadwaj’s accusation, the Tihar administration said that Kejriwal had video conference consultation from relevant top doctors at AIIMS on Saturday.

“Kejriwal was informed that there was no serious concern and was advised to continue with the prescribed medicines, which will be evaluated and reviewed on a regular basis,” a prison official said during a 40-minute in-depth meeting. The official said, “Kejriwal did not bring up the topic of insulin, nor did the doctors recommend it.”

Bharadwaj objected to the “deviation” from the accepted practice of using measurements of random blood sugar levels to monitor blood sugar levels while fasting and after meals, claiming that there is a specific way to test blood sugar levels.

“You report your fasting blood sugar level, which is the amount you measure when you wake up in the morning. Following breakfast, your blood sugar level is checked two hours later. It’s a regular procedure, he added.
