Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanniya Kumari observe voting with calm

On Friday, there were reports of over 200 people’s names being absent from the voter list at two voting places in Kadayanallur. Consequently, there was a verbal altercation between the poll workers and the individuals whose names were absent.

The voters were calmed down by Puliyangudi Deputy Superintendent of Police G Venkadesan, who also asked them to appeal the returning officer. There were several instances of technical issues with the electronic voting machines in both districts. Nevertheless, they were settled in less than an hour. A technical issue caused the voting time at the Keezha Kattoor polling station in the Alangulam assembly area to be prolonged by two hours.

M Jansirani, the AIADMK’s candidate for Tirunelveli, cast her ballot at Thisayanvilai. In Nochikulam, B Sathya of NTK cast her ballot. Speaker of the assembly M Appavu cast his ballot in Kavalkinaru, while Rani Srikumar, the DMK’s candidate for Tenkasi, did the same in Sankarankovil.

Tribals from the Pechiparai hills crossed the dam at Kanniyakumari by boat in order to vote at the Pechiparai tribal residential school. Voters from Thatchamalai, Nadanampothai, Mudavanpothai, Kalapparai, Chinnamootutheri, Thottamalai, and Maramalai tribal villages were transported to Pechiparai by ferry, and then they had to walk one kilometer to the voting place, according to K Kumar from Thatchamalai tribal village, who spoke with TNIE.

According to Kumar, around 500 voters paid for their boat rides. He also said that it would be beneficial to have a polling place at Thatchamalai. At 7 am, people flocked to polling places due to the intense heat. Voter turnout differed between booths.

The heat did not ruin 19-year-old EB Reshma’s first-ever voting experience as a voter from Erachakulam. She is a BFSc student. There were reported EVM glitches at a few polling places in the area, which led to delays. These were fixed after the polls were reopened.

According to sources, there was an effort made to take out a wire from the EVM auxiliary unit at a booth located inside the South Thamaraikulam police boundary. He was stopped in his tracks, and a police complaint was made against him. Election day in the Kanniyakumari district was quiet, according to Kanniyakumari SP E Sundaravathanan.
