UP: Observers give prayers in Prayagraj on Somvati Amavasya and take a holy plunge in the Ganga River

On Monday, devotees celebrated Somvati Amavasya in Prayagraj, on the banks of the Ganga River.

In Hinduism, Somvati Amavasya is a particularly significant day when followers bathe, give alms, worship, and conduct rituals for their ancestors. On this day, giving alms and taking a bath in one of the holy rivers are said to bring merit.

On Somvati Amavasya, devotees conducted unique rites for their ancestors. On this auspicious day, those who came to wash showed delight in taking part in the worship, rituals, and bathing on the banks of the Ganga.

Seema Rai remarked, “As part of the ritual, I have come to take a holy dip in the River Ganga,” to ANI, a devotee. I have given alms, carried out rites, and prayed for our forefathers’ peace.

On the auspicious day of Somvati Amavasya, Asha Soni, another devotee, told ANI that rituals for ancestors, tarpan, charity, and merit are deemed vital. As a result, followers go around the Peepal tree and take baths in the Ganga. Ganga Aarti in the morning is really important.

Since Somvati Amavasya is devoted to honoring ancestors or predecessors, it is recommended that one employ it to eliminate “Pitru Dosha.”
In addition to doing rituals like havan and yajna, giving alms, feeding animals, and chanting mantras, Hindus take a holy plunge in the Ganga on this day.

The first Somvati Amavasya of 2024 occurs on Monday, April 8, during which devotees pray to their ancestors to remove the “Pitru Dosha.”

Pitra Dosha, sometimes referred to as “Pitru Dosh,” is a bad astrological circumstance that may be seen in an individual’s birth chart. According to legend, it happens when Rahu and Sun are in conjunction in the birth chart’s ninth house, which is connected to dads and ancestors.
Monday Amavasyas have particular meaning, hence they are observed as Somvati Amavasyas in remembrance of the ancestors.
