Weather Update: IMD expects thunderstorms and heavy rains in Northwest India along with an intense heat wave in Odisha

In a recent bulletin, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted severe rainfall in sporadic regions of West Bengal and Sikkim in the Sub-Himalayan region. In rare instances, hailstorms have been observed in Vidarbha and Himachal Pradesh. IMD has issued a severe heat wave warning for both Gangetic West Bengal today, April 19–21, 2024, and Odisha today.

The IMD Forecast and Advisories:
Northwest India is predicted to be affected today by a fresh Western Disturbance that began as a cyclonic circulation over Iran and neighboring territories in the middle and upper tropospheric levels. On April 18 and 19, 2024, this disturbance is expected to bring fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over Uttarakhand and over Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh.

Over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from April 18 to 20, West Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan on April 19, and West Rajasthan from April 18 to 19, 2024, isolated rains along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are predicted. On April 18 and 19, 2024, isolated hailstorms are predicted to pass across Himachal Pradesh, and on April 19, 2024, over Uttarakhand. IMD predicts that on April 19, 2024, there will be significant rain or snowfall throughout Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad. From now until April 19, there is a chance of strong surface winds across Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

At lower tropospheric levels, there is a cyclonic circulation across northeast Bihar and the neighboring Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, and another over northeast Assam.

 

Temperature to Watch: across the next three days, there is a good chance that maximum temperatures will rise by 2-3°C across the East and some regions of the South Peninsular India, and there won’t be any notable changes after that. across the next two days, there won’t be any notable changes to the maximum temperatures across northwest India; but, over the following three days, there will be a decline of 2-3°C.
