As the Bundesliga Title Draws Near, Bayer Leverkusen defeats Freiburg 3-2 to go 38 games undefeated

With a 3-2 victory at Freiburg on Sunday, Bayer Leverkusen extended their winning streak to 38 games in all competitions with a goal from Florian Wirtz after 84 seconds.

With eight games remaining in their pursuit of the club’s first-ever Bundesliga championship, Leverkusen’s seventh straight league victory maintained them 10 points ahead of reigning champions Bayern Munich.

“It was a well-deserved win and a terrific effort. Before complimenting his playmaker Wirtz’s performance, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso said on DAZN, “It’s not easy to win in Freiburg, but we keep going.”

“It’s not only the goal; he had an incredible performance. He is very talented, and I am thrilled to see him grow.

One of Leverkusen’s standout players this year, Wirtz, got things going in grand fashion. With a brilliant strike with his right foot after cutting in from the left, the Germany striker scored his sixth league goal of the year.

The goal early on startled Freiburg, who had just suffered a 5-0 crushing at the hands of West Ham in the Europa League. Leverkusen will play the Londoners in the competition’s quarterfinal the following month.

However, Freiburg hit back against the flow of play, as Japan striker Ritsu Doan exchanged passes with Lucas Hoeler in a slick fashion before drilling a low shot past Lukas Hradecky, who was blind.

However, Leverkusen took the lead back just before the half thanks to a mistake made by Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, which allowed Adam Hlozek to tap into an empty net.

Patrik Schick’s spectacular finish to a brilliant Leverkusen counterattack put the finishing touches on yet another comfortable win for Alonso’s club.

With two stoppage-time goals against Qarabag on Thursday in Europe, Czech striker Jeremie Frimpong’s cross from the right was stroked into the top corner by the player.

Although Freiburg’s Yannik Keitel managed to rally, the damage had already been done, as the hosts found themselves in ninth place and on the verge of European qualifying.

Borussia Dortmund overcame late challenges from Eintracht Frankfurt in the weekend’s last match to win 3-1 and maintain a one-point lead over RB Leipzig in the fight for fourth place.

After defeating PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last week to advance to the quarterfinals and face Atletico Madrid, Dortmund trailed to a goal by former hero Mario Goetze of Frankfurt, which was scored in front of the Yellow Wall.

However, Karim Adeyemi gave the home team a response just before halftime.

In the 81st minute, Dortmund took the lead for the first time thanks to a diving header from Julian Brandt’s free kick by Mats Hummels, and Emre Can’s stoppage-time penalty added the finishing touch.

Hummels said, “We feel much better going into the international break than we did two weeks ago, having now won four straight games.”

“Obviously, we’re falling behind in the Bundesliga, but we’re all very happy to be in the Champions League quarterfinals.”
