Everton deals Reds a major blow

In a thrilling 2-0 home win against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton may have ended the visitors’ fading Premier League championship chances.

After more than 13 years, Everton won the derby at Goodison Park, keeping Liverpool and Arsenal apart at the top of the standings. With four games remaining, Juergen Klopp’s team trails the Gunners (77) by three points. With two games remaining, holders Manchester City, with 73 points, are still in the lead. With their victory, Everton can now relax as they sit in 16th place, eight points above the relegation zone.

“Very disappointed in a lot of ways, and I believe that everyone needs to examine themselves in the mirror to determine whether they truly want to win the league and whether they gave it their all in their performances.” Virgil van Dijk, captain of Liverpool, said.

“We have no chance to win the title if we play like we did tonight, but there are still games to be played.” It’s a difficult one, and we must undoubtedly perform much better against a team that is fighting for relegation.

Since Demarai Gray scored in a 4-1 league home defeat against Liverpool in late 2021, Branthwaite is the first player for Everton to score against the Reds. Everton manager Sean Dyche said, “We spoke about the desire, the energy, and the physical side of the game.”
