India’s captain for Twenty20 internationals, Hardik Pandya, has been ruled out of the Cricket World Cup 2023, the next Twenty20 internationals against Australia, and the short-format matches during their December tour to South Africa. Suryakumar Yadav is most likely to captain the team in his absence, at least for the next series against Australia. Either Ruturaj Gaikwad or Suryakumar was expected to head the Men in Blue, according to a previous report from the Press Trust of India (PTI). A report claims that Surya is heading the side, which is verified.
Not to be overlooked, Surya is a member of the Indian World Cup team. He bats at No. 6 and is India’s primary batsman now that Hardik Pandya is out of the competition. On November 19, India will play in the World Cup final in Ahmedabad. On November 23, the Twenty20 Internationals will begin in Visakhapatnam, four days later. This implies that after the World Cup, Suryakumar and other members of the ODI and T20I squads will need to take a plane to Vizag.
“Hardik will need some time to recover fully from his injury. He is not going to be able to play in Australia. A top BCCI source who was aware of the events told PTI, “It would make more sense for him to aim for a return during the South Africa series.” The source remained nameless.
Another strong candidate to govern India is Ruturaj. As the captain of India, he has already enjoyed a fantastic start. In October, under his direction, the men’s cricket team in Hangzhou won the nation’s first gold medal at the Asian Games. When MS Dhoni hangs up his boots for good, he is already expected to take over as captain of the Chennai Super Kings, the five-time winners of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Surya seems to be the perfect candidate to lead India on the field, however, given his expertise. Australia has not yet announced their T20Is roster, just like India. Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection panel is anticipated to convene shortly to deliberate on the T20I series squad.
