Rain cancels the first One-Day International between Bangladesh and New Zealand in 2023

The first one-day international between Bangladesh and New Zealand was canceled on Thursday in Dhaka due to persistent rain.

After the New Zealand innings was interrupted by rain at 136/5 in 33.4 overs, match officials declared the game to be over.

Will Young led New Zealand in scoring with 58 points off 91 balls. He also contributed 97 runs with Henry Nicholls for the third wicket, which helped the visitors come back from 2-16.

When Bangladesh won the toss earlier and decided to bowl first, the game was just 4.3 overs into it when rain delayed play for more than two hours.

After the game restarted, Mustafizur Rahman removed Chad Bowes for one and Finn Allen for nine in consecutive overs. The game was reduced to a 42-overs-a-side match due to the weather.

Before Mustafizur ended their collaboration by catching Nicholls’ leg before charging 44, Young and Nicholls repaired the damage.

Young and Rachin Ravindra were swiftly dismissed by left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed to stop New Zealand’s momentum.

Young had previously escaped on 18, thanks to Bangladesh’s refusal to consider the batsman’s lbw appeal.

When rain again interrupted New Zealand’s batting order, Tom Blundell and Cole McConchie were both on eight runs.

Nasum took home 2-21, while Mustafizur ended with 3-27.

On September 23 and 26, the same venue will host the second and third ODIs.

Since losing all seven games against the hosts in the most recent two series, in 2010 and 2013, New Zealand has failed to win an ODI series in Bangladesh in the previous 15 years.

Before the World Cup begins in the neighboring nation of India on October 5, this series will be the last one for both sides.
