Shot putter Jolien Boumkwo runs the 100-meter hurdles to save the Belgian from being disqualified in the European Athletics Team Championship

In order to prevent her team from being disqualified at the European Championships in Poland, Belgian shot put and hammer throw champion Jolien Boumkwo stepped up and raced a 100-meter hurdles race outside of her event.

When two hurdlers from Belgium had to withdraw due to injury, Boumkwo stepped in, and a video of her meticulously attempting each hurdle on Saturday went viral.

The team would have been disqualified if there had been no athletes from Belgium competing in the race.

The 29-year-old completed the race in 32.81 seconds without clearing any hurdles, 19 seconds later than Spanish sprinter Teresa Errandonea, who took first place in 13.22.

As Boumkwo scored two points for the team, the crowd cheered and her opponents praised her.

Since the worst three nations will be demoted from Division 1, the points might be very important.
