T20 World Cup: Ramjani thinks Ugandan players are prepared for the once-in-a-lifetime chance

Mumbai Batting all-rounder Alpesh Ramjani believes that a self-assured group of Ugandan cricket players are ready to take advantage of the “opportunity of a lifetime” in the next T20 World Cup.

In November of last year, Uganda showed remarkable talent in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifier, coming in second behind Namibia to make their debut in the main tournament.

They had also defeated regional powerhouse Zimbabwe along the way.

Playing against people you look up to is an incredible experience, but it’s also the chance of a lifetime. This is a huge chance for those of us who want to play in the top leagues in the world, Ramjani said to the media on Thursday at the Wankhede Stadium.

According to Ramjani, they would greatly gain from the selection of Abhay Sharma, a former cricket player for Delhi and Railways, as the national team coach.

Bringing in an Asian coach is a great idea because of his wealth of expertise. It will undoubtedly benefit both our team’s performance in the World Cup and the players’ personal growth. His methods and expertise will support Uganda’s development as a unit,” he said.

Two additional players on the Ugandan side of Indian ancestry are Ronak Patel and Dinesh Nakrani, in addition to Ramjani.

According to Ramjani, the sport has become much more popular after Uganda qualified for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA in June.

After rugby and football, cricket is now a popular game. Because to our qualifying, cricket has become more popular in Uganda. They’re learning about the sport. Uganda plays extremely high-pressure games against Kenya, much as India does against Pakistan,” he remarked.

“For 48 million people, it was a dream come true. We were unable to express ourselves, and it was difficult to realize that we had qualified,” Ramjani said when announcing his sponsorship agreement with Gretex Corporate.

According to Ramjani, Uganda will spend the next eighteen days in a preparation camp in Sri Lanka.

“We will start an eighteen-day camp in Sri Lanka tomorrow to begin our T20 World Cup preparations. In Colombo and Galle, we’ll play against Sri Lanka A and a few other teams,” he said.

The 29-year-old, who developed his cricket abilities in Mumbai, relocated to Uganda in the middle of 2021.

Ramjani participated in the Ranji Trophy camps for two seasons after playing for the Cricket Club of India, Mumbai U-16 and U-19 sides, and others.

While playing for Shivaji Park Lions in the 2018 T20 Mumbai League, Ramjani won the Best Developmental Player award. The league is now gone.

Ramjani has played 39 Twenty20 international matches for Uganda since making his debut against Botswana in September 2022.

Due to his impressive 569 runs and 70 wickets, he was also selected for the Men’s T20I Team of the Year 2023, headed by India’s Suryakumar Yadav.

Ramjani’s goals extend beyond the World Cup.

“We will enter the six-team Challenge League for three years in a row after the T20 World Cup, with the top two finishers receiving two years of ODI status. We get to play with the countries that play Tests for those two years,” he said.
