Tears well up as Andy Murray dedicates his Davis Cup victory to his deceased grandmother

Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam champion, broke down in tears when he admitted missing his grandmother’s funeral to play in the Davis Cup Finals.

In the finals group stage on Friday, Murray overcame a deficit to upset Leandro Riedi 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4 and give Britain a 2-1 lead over Switzerland.

The Scottish player needed more than three hours to beat Riedi, and at the conclusion of his on-court interview, he was overcome with emotion.

“I’m having a difficult day today. Today is my grandmother’s funeral,” Murray stated. I apologize to my family for being unable to attend, but Grandma, this one’s for you.

Murray then went back to his seat and cried while hiding his head in his towel as the Manchester fans cheered.

Later, the 36-year-old Murray said that he had discussed whether or not to play with his father, who had advised him that she would want him to. Make sure you win, he simply replied, and I did.”

Stan Wawrinka beat Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-4 to draw the match, but in the doubles match, Britain’s Dan Evans and Neal Skupski triumphed against Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker 6-3, 6-3 to win Group B.

Britain beat Australia 2-1 in the tournament’s first match and is anticipated to go to the Final 8 in Malaga, southern Spain, in November.

Switzerland is winless, while Australia and France each have one victory and one defeat. The top two players from each of the four groups go on.

With a 6-3, 6-4 win against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Group C, Novak Djokovic sent Serbia to the Final 8.

To give Serbia a 3-0 victory and set up a matchup with the Czech Republic to determine who would finish top in the group, Laslo Djere had won his match earlier in Valencia, while Nikola Cacic and Miomir Kecmanovic had won the doubles. There are two wins for each nation.

The Netherlands has won its first two games in Group D in Split, Croatia, while the defending champion Canada has won its opening two games in Group A in Bologna.
