Update on India’s T20 World Cup Squad: Ten Players Verified, Tight Competition for Last Five Spots

Ten players are very certain to make the cut, so when Indian selectors convene later in April to choose a 15-man team for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, they will allegedly be arguing over five positions.

The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will have a difficult assignment in determining who will occupy the five open spots, although performances in the current IPL 2024 will be a major factor. The reason for this is because there are too many candidates vying for the few available positions; four candidates are vying for the position of second wicketkeeper alone.

In addition to skipper Rohit Sharma, other players with definite berths are Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav, according to a report by news agency PTI.

But there’s a competition developing amongst a number of elite IPL players for the remaining spots, particularly for the second wicketkeeper. Candidates for Pant’s backup include Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Jitesh Sharma, and Dhruv Jurel.

Jaiswal vs. Gill

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, two young players, are vying for the position of backup opener in the world cup, as rumors have claimed that the Indian selectors may pair Rohit and Kohli to start the innings.

Although Jaiswal hasn’t had a great IPL season so far, he has a stellar prior record. While Gill has been running well, he will need to maintain consistency to keep ahead of Jaiswal throughout the race.

Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Ravi Bishnoi are vying for the reserve position, with Kuldeep and Jadeja being the first-choice spinners.

Because of his batting and fielding, Axar has a tiny advantage over his two competitors. Despite being the most skilled bowler out of the three, Chahal may end up missing the bus once again if history is any guide.
