Watch: England’s Ben Foakes, a wicketkeeper, almost creates a controversy as he tries to stump like Alex Carey and fails

The England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes’s vain attempt to stump Jasprit Bumrah on Day 4 of the Hyderabad Test, with his team one wicket from victory against India, almost summoned memories of the’spirit of cricket’ controversy from the previous year’s Ashes series.

As India was chasing 231 in the 66th over of their innings, Bumrah attempted a draw shot off spinner Tom Hartley. Strangely, even when the tail-ender was well within the crease, he jumped once before quickly shadow practicing the shot after missing it.

After collecting the ball neatly, Foakes hesitated, perhaps anticipating Bumrah’s next move. He then removed the bails and made a stumping request.

But Bumrah was back on the ground when Foakes tampered with the bails.

Screengrabs of the unsuccessful attempt were quickly shared on social media, reminding fans of England’s “meltdown” over a similar incident during the 2023 Ashes series when Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey successfully stumped Jonny Bairstow. This action sparked a heated discussion about the “spirit of cricket,” with England captain Ben Stokes asking, “Would I want to win a game in that manner? No, is the response.

Following that incident, the Lord’s crowd jeered Australian players, and a couple of them were heckled as they made their way back to the dressing room during the lunch break.

Following an examination into the unpleasant events, two members of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) were suspended and one member was banned for engaging in “abusive, offensive, or inappropriate behavior or language.”

In the meanwhile, England is ecstatic over their stunning victory over India in the Hyderabad Test, which came to an end on Day 4. England rallied after falling behind due to a first-inning advantage thanks to Ollie Pope’s 196 in their 420-all out total.

With five periods left in the match, India needed to win by 231 runs, but they were bowled out for 202, giving England a 1-0 lead in the five-match series on Sunday.

In Vizag, the second Test will begin on February 2.
