In Tamil Nadu, efforts are on to preserve a severely sick 70-year-old captive elephant

Saratha, a 70-year-old female elephant, became unwell on Tuesday at the Kozhikamuthi camp in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR), and veterinarians are doing all they can to preserve her.

According to sources, the elephant passed out on Tuesday night after coming back from a neighboring field where she had gone to feed. The female jumbo is being treated by A Sukumar, a Coimbatore forest veterinary officer, and veterinary assistant surgeon E Vijayaraghavan.

They used sand bags to support her and a kumki to hoist her with the assistance of a team under the direction of M Sundaravel, the Ulanthy forest range officer. Nevertheless, Saratha was too feeble to support herself, thus the attempt failed.

Thirteen bottles of glucose, painkillers, and multivitamin mineral solutions were administered by intravenous injection (IV). But nothing has changed for the better. She didn’t eat the banana, watermelon, or sugarcane that we also gave her. In actuality, she didn’t even sip water, according to a forest department representative.

When an elephant falls, it usually gets back up on its own. But Saratha’s advanced age makes her weak. We’re doing all we can to rescue her,” the official said.
