After consultation, the UP High Court Bar Association reverses its decision to strike

On Friday, the High Court Bar Association decided to reverse its earlier decision to skip work in protest of the alleged lathicharge of attorneys on August 29 in the Hapur area.

The action was taken a day after the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh stated that the state-wide lawyer strike had been called off as a result of discussions with the chief secretary.

In a meeting conducted here on Friday morning, the High Court Bar Association resolved to revoke the request made to refrain from doing judicial work, according to Ashok Kumar Singh, the organization’s head, who spoke to PTI.

He continued by saying that attorneys are once again visiting the High Court.

Following discussions with the chief secretary, the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh declared Thursday night that the attorneys’ statewide strike will be called off.

Since August 30, attorneys in Uttar Pradesh have gone on strike in protest of the alleged police use of force against attorneys in Hapur the previous day.

“Discussions with Chief Secretary Durga Shankar Mishra were really productive. Shiv Kishore Gaur, the head of the Uttar Pradesh Bar Council, told PTI on Thursday that he had promised to dismiss the lawsuits that had been filed against attorneys around the state during the agitation.

He said, “The proposal for this law will be passed within a predetermined time limit. A committee on advocates protection law has been formed, in which a representative from the Bar Council will participate.”

“The demand for the suspension of responsible police officers and the transfer of top police officers in Hapur has been accepted,” stated Gaur. Due to the acceptance of our demands, we are ending the strike.

The legal profession’s strike had an impact on the district courts in Uttar Pradesh as well as the operation of the Allahabad High Court.

Lawyers were protesting against the filing of a case against a woman advocate and her father on August 29 in Hapur when police allegedly lathi-charged them. This was in response to an altercation the woman lawyer had with police while driving to Ghaziabad at the time.
