Ghaziabad, UP, Is Its New Name? Civic Body Will Talk About Proposal Today; There Are New Name Options

The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is anticipated to go on with its name-changing campaign, with Ghaziabad, which borders Delhi, probably renaming itself in response to requests from Hindu organizations. During its board meeting today (Tuesday), the Ghaziabad Civic body will talk about the idea to rename the city.

The Times of India said, citing Ghaziabad Mayor Sunita Dayal, that although a number of Hindu organizations have called for Ghaziabad to be renamed, this would be the first time the issue is addressed at the executive level. Gajnagar and Harnandi Nagar are potential names for Ghaziabad. Sanjay Singh, a BJP councillor representing Ghaziabad’s ward number 100, presented the renaming suggestion on Monday.

Ghaziabad, which is a part of the National Capital Region (NCR), should be given its proper position since it has a great historical significance, according to Sanjay Singh. “My idea was accepted by the board, and we will talk about it on Tuesday. I have mostly suggested the names Gajnagar and Harnandi Nagar. Ghaziabad is an important historical site. The Times of India cited him as saying, “It’s high time the city is given its rightful place.”

The chief priest of the Dudheshwar Nath Temple, Mahant Narayan Giri, said that Ghaziabad was once a part of Hastinapur, the capital of the Kuru Kingdom, using ancient Hindu scriptures as support. The region that is now Ghaziabad was once a part of Hastinapur, which is located around 40 kilometers away in Mahabharat. Elephants and other wild creatures lived in this wooded region. The name Gajpura or Gajnagar may be appropriate as the word Gaj signifies elephant,” Giri said, as reported by the Times of India.

Giri also had a meeting with CM Yogi in 2022 and presented a memo. “The CM promised to investigate our requests. Giri said, “I had proposed calling Ghaziabad Gajprastha, Dudheshwarath Nagar, or Harnandipuram.

The BJP’s majority in the municipal council seems to remove any obstacles to the renaming, which would add to Uttar Pradesh’s record of renamed districts and cities. The biggest was Allahabad, which changed its name to Prayagraj in 2018. In 2021, the Ayodhya Cantonment was the new designation for the Faizabad intersection.

The Aligarh Municipal Corporation overwhelmingly approved a proposal in November of last year to rename Aligarh as Harigarh. The Mughalsarai junction will henceforth be known as the Deen Dayal Upadhyay railway station, among other renaming projects. The Union Home Ministry approved the renaming of Telia Afghan village in the Deoria district as Telia Shukla and Mundera Baazar in the Gorakhpur district as Chauri-Chaura in December 2023.
