NCRB 2022 DATA: In Uttar Pradesh, housewives, the unemployed, and students make up the majority of suicide deaths

Based on statistics from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2022, the majority of suicides in Uttar Pradesh—of the 8176 documented cases—are committed by housewives (19.95%), jobless people (18.85%), and students (12.96%).

The data computation showed that the remaining 48.24% was made up of persons from various occupations, such as self-employed people (12.36%), salaried workers (8.659%), business class people (7.98%), everyday gamblers (5.99%), people in the agricultural industry (5.05%), and others.

Statistics show that 1631 housewives, 1541 jobless individuals, 1060 students, 1011 self-employed people, 708 members of the salaried class, 653 businesspeople, 490 daily wagerers, and 413 members of the agricultural community committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh.

Dr. Manini Srivastava, head of the Institute of Women’s Studies and assistant professor of psychology, said that social isolation, marital discord, domestic violence, financial stress, and a lack of emotional support are some of the reasons behind the high suicide rates among housewives. In midlife, she said, many experience the “empty nest” feeling.

Regarding mental health awareness, she emphasized that in order to mitigate these concerns, it is crucial to promote support networks and foster open communication among families.

She went on to say that there may be a connection between social isolation, financial hardship, and a feeling of despair and the high suicide rates among the jobless.

She went on to say that mental health problems may be exacerbated by unstable income and the problems that go along with it, highlighting the significance of support systems and mental health services for jobless people.

When the number of housewives, students, and jobless people in Uttar Pradesh is compared to other states, it is found to be lower than in a number of other states, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Karnataka, and Gujarat.

Moreover, Uttar Pradesh is ranked ninth in terms of professional suicides (708), seventh in terms of suicides by individuals working in the agricultural industry (413 suicides), and thirteenth in terms of daily wagerer suicides (490 cases).

According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2022 statistics, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) has a low overall suicide rate of 3.5, placing the state in the 31st rank out of 28 states and eight union territories (UT). This rate represents a more promising future when compared to five UTs, including Delhi, and 25 other states.

Compared to states like Maharashtra (22,746), Tamil Nadu (19,834), Madhya Pradesh (15,386), Karnataka (13,606), West Bengal (12,669), Kerala (10,162), Telangana (9,980), Gujarat (9,002), Andhra Pradesh (8,908), and Chhattisgarh (8,446), U.P. ranks 11th in the nation in terms of absolute numbers of suicides reported.

Sikkim (43.1), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (42.8), Puducherry (29.7), Kerala (28.5), Chhattisgarh (28.2), Telangana (26.3), Tamil Nadu (25.9), Karnataka (20.2), Goa (19.2), Maharashtra (18.1), Madhya Pradesh (17.9), Tripura (17.3), Dadar Haveli and Daman and Diu (17.1), Andhra Pradesh (16.8), and Delhi (16.2) are among the smaller states and Union Territories. These states and union territories have significantly higher suicide rates.

Just a few states and Union Territories have lower suicide rates than others: Bihar (702 suicides, 0.6 rates), Manipur (26 suicides, 0.8 rates), Nagaland (49 suicides, 2.2 rates), Jammu and Kashmir (323 suicides, 2.4 rates), and Lakshadweep (two suicides, 2.9 rates). There have been 170,924 recorded suicides in all states and Union Territories combined, translating to an overall suicide rate of 12.4.

By comparing the overall number of events with the population per lakh, the suicide rate is determined. For instance, the suicide rate for the estimated 23.409 crore people living in Uttar Pradesh is determined by dividing the total number of suicides (8,176) by 2,340.9.

IN SOUTHERN STATES, FARMERS SUICIDE MOST

Maharashtra had the highest number of farmer suicides (4,248), followed by Karnataka (2,392), Madhya Pradesh (641), Tamil Nadu (728), Andhra Pradesh (917), and Chhattisgarh (496).
