Man’s Bali vacation ends tragically when he develops a rare autoimmune disease

A guy was left face down paralyzed after developing a rare auto-immune illness while on vacation in Bali. The 23-year-old Cheshire real estate agent Tom Pegg had an upset stomach upon his return to Dubai from Bali in June of this year, which is a common complaint among tourists. His symptoms worsened over the course of the next five days, and his throat and eye both started to swell, according to the Independent. When he arrived to the hospital, doctors feared an allergic response and gave him an antihistamine injection.

But two days later, Pegg’s closest friend took him to the emergency room after seeing that both of his eyelids had swelled shut and that he was having trouble breathing and speaking. According to The Mirror, the young guy was identified as having Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare condition in which the body destroys itself and shuts down.

“I had never heard of the sickness in my life, and it has been incredibly frightening. My brother is a really nice, easygoing, and charismatic person. He used to be a robust, healthy, and jovial man, but now he’s feeble and seems to be a little child. It’s a terrible sickness that strikes suddenly and without warning. His sister Hollie Pegg, a beauty therapist who is 28 years old, claimed it had placed her brother’s life on pause. She said that her sister suffers from a severe form of the condition and is paralyzed from the neck down. He is now relearning how to walk, although it is unclear how long it will take.

Pegg’s 56-year-old father, Adam Pegg, and sister travelled to be at his side as he was originally kept in an induced coma for five days. According to the Independent, Julia Royle, his mother, was unable to attend since she is also battling stage three breast cancer.

According to reports, his family has donated 100,000 euros to pay for his transportation home to the University of North Staffordshire Hospital for treatment. His sister Hollie Pegg said, “Having Tom home is a terrific diversion for my mom; she is very relieved and sees him every day. According to Hollie Pegg, he also reacted well to plasma exchange therapy, which involves filtering blood to eliminate potentially harmful antibodies that assault neurons. His limbs are now functioning as a result. She continued, adding that he had also recovered use of his eyes after briefly losing them.

He can sometimes get out of bed, but he still needs a lot of oxygen and is quite weak. He can’t breathe via his mouth or nose because of a tracheotomy in his throat, which also prohibits him from speaking or eating, according to his sister Hollie Pegg.
