Mystery Shipwreck SS Nemesis Discovered 120 Years After It Disappeared

The thought of a ship setting off on a voyage only to disappear into the abyss, leaving a trail of unsolved mysteries, is unsettling. A similar story occurred about a century ago when a ship and its crew vanished into thin air, leaving the occurrence mysterious. With the recent discovery of evidence pertaining to the lost ship, this mystery has now been resolved.

The coal-carrying steamship SS Nemesis set sail from Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia on July 8, 1904, with the intention of delivering its cargo to Melbourne. The New York Post reported that the steamboat and its thirty-two crew members disappeared when it ran into a severe storm off the coast of New South Wales. The 240-foot yacht was last seen off the coast of Wollongong, but its location remained a mystery despite deaths and wreckage coming ashore.

Subsea Professional Marine Services, a remote-sensing business entrusted with finding missing goods off the coast of Sydney, made recent advancements in the hunt. They discovered the undamaged wreckage of the SS Nemesis 525 feet below the surface. When Australia’s national research organization, CSIRO, took underwater photos highlighting the ship’s unique characteristics last year, it confirmed the finding.

Now, efforts are being made to find and inform the surviving family members of the crew members who died a century ago. Authorities anticipate that the finding will provide closure to the relatives and loved ones of the approximately forty children who lost their parents in the tragedy. In order to facilitate more research, CSIRO intends to simultaneously assemble the video footage into a 3D model of the wreck.

It is said that the SS Nemesis was overtaken by enormous sea surges and became a victim of nature some 120 years after it vanished. It’s possible that the ship’s engine sustained irreversible damage, causing quick flooding and an early death that prevented the crew from having time to launch lifeboats.

A century-long mystery has come to a close with the discovery of the SS Nemesis wreckage, which provides solace to the relatives of those lost at sea and throws light on the awful destiny of the mishappen ship.
