Six demonstrators in downtown Delhi climb a mobile tower and a tree

New Delhi: On Wednesday morning, six demonstrators in central Delhi ascended a tree and a cellphone tower, setting off a high drama. Authorities from the fire department and law police hurried to make sure the demonstrators were safe. They all agreed to back down from their demonstration after two hours of talks. The six guys, according to the police, were protesting the Cauvery water problem and were from Tamil Nadu.

At 9:34 a.m., fire authorities got a distress call; the caller told them that two people were protesting on top of a tree close to Jantar Mantar. Firefighters hurried to the scene after learning of the situation. However, the linguistic barrier made efforts to speak with the demonstrators fruitless. After that, Tamil Nadu police officers were sent in to use a microphone to persuade the demonstrators to down safely, according to an official.

The official said, “After an hour-long effort, a broncho lift was then deployed, facilitating the successful rescue of the two individuals.”

At 10.30 am, a similar call was sent to the police. Four demonstrators had climbed a mobile tower this time around Kerala Bhawan.

“The rescue teams succeeded in bringing down all four individuals after an hour of convincing,” a police official said.

Up until Wednesday night, no legal action had been taken against the demonstrators.
